Blood Orange Cocktails

prepared by and photo by Emily Doscher

Tis the season for blood oranges.  Any one of these cocktails will give you a blast of Vitamin C.   Blood oranges are not as acidic as common oranges, therefore they are less bitter and slightly sweeter.

Size: Blood Orange Bourbon: serves 1... Winter Rickey: serves 1... Blood Orange Margaritas: pitcher

3 tbsp blood orange juice (store bought or freshly squeezed)
2 tbsp bourbon
1 tsp sugar
Drop of bitters
Blood orange slice (garnish)
1 1/2 oz gin
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz blood-orange juice (freshly squeezed or store bought)
1/2 oz honey syrup (equal parts honey & water)3 oz soda water
3 oz soda water
Orange wheel/slice, for garnish
1 cup blood-orange juice (freshly squeezed or store bought)
3 tbsp granulated sugar
8 oz premium tequila
7 oz triple sec
1 blood orange, sliced, for garnish

BLOOD ORANGE BOURBON:  Fill a tumbler with ice.  Add blood orange juice, bourbon, sugar and finally bitters.  Stir vigorously.  Bend blood orange slice in half; slide into glass.

WINTER RICKEY:  Build ingredients over ice in a tall glass, and garnish with an orange wheel.

BLOOD ORANGE MARGARITAS:  Make a blood orange simple syrup by combining the sugar and blood orange juice in small sauce pan; simmer over low heat until thick and syrupy.  Allow to cool completely.

Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher.  To prepare a drink, pour 6 ounces into a shaker filled with ice.  Pour into margarita glass, garnish with a blood orange slice.
