Kombucha: The Health Benefits-If You Can Choke It Down

CNN

I have been reading a few things about how healthy Kombucha is for your gut. They say it is a natural detoxifier for your liver. It also helps with digestion. So, I thought I have to try it. It is a nice change from drinking water and unsweetened iced tea. I was at Trader Joe’s and bought 3 bottles.

Everyone said it is similar to a carbonated beverage. I was so thirsty, so I cracked it open in the car and started it gulping it down. I nearly gagged when I swallowed and finally tasted it. It is disgusting. As thirsty as I was, I threw it out. I gave the other two bottles away. I am just sticking with my over the counter probiotic pills for a healthy gut and dandelion tea for my liver. I don’t know how anyone can drink the stuff.

The Basics:
What is it?
Kombucha tea is a fermented drink made with tea, sugar, bacteria and yeast. Although some refer to kombucha as being a mushroom tea, kombucha is not a mushroom — it’s a colony of bacteria and yeast.

What Does It Do: It’s said to help prevent and manage serious health conditions, from blood pressure to cancer.

Does it Really Work? According to the Mayo Clinic, the claims are not backed by science.

Can it be Harmful to Drink? It might cause an upset stomach upset. There have been reports of infections because the tea is often brewed at home under non-sterile conditions, making contamination likely.
