Local Specialty Foods

Bergen County regional food specialties are products that celebrate the uniqueness of a place. Try a chocolate covered pickle, homemade kielbasa, or fresh turkey. This list might inspire you to seek out these food products that taste good and are grown or created by small-scale producers.

Pickle Licious, 384 Cedar Lane, Teaneck, NJ: Specializes in pickles, of course, sold in all different sizes. They are also famous for homemade olive tapenade, green olives, kalamata olives, sun-dried tomato paste, marinated artichokes, and stuffed grape leaves. They offer 7 varieties of hummus and have created Taylor’s Hot & Spicy Mushrooms, Alex’s Sun-Dried Olive Mix & Carol’s Lemon Zest Olive Mix. Gift-wrapped mason jars of pickled goodies are a big hit for any occasion, be it a holiday, sporting event or just hanging with friends. Chocolate dipped pickles for just $3 are available on Fridays and Sundays. Don’t laugh, just give it a try and you`ll like it! On Sunday they have family day and each child gets a free pickle-on-a-stick with your purchase.

Swiss Pork Store, 24-10 Fairlawn Avenue, Fairlawn, NJ: In the same location since 1950, time has moved forward only on the other side of the door. A local legend of the original owners is that one of the two men who opened the place in 1950 was German, the other was Swiss. They were concerned about anti-German sentiment just after WWII, so they named the shop the Swiss Pork Store. There are also several kinds of homemade kielbasa, knockwursts, bratwursts, head cheese, pimento, pepper and olive loafs, all kinds of ham, Canadian bacon, perfectly smoked, thick-cut slab bacon and a full line of meat – and that’s just a sampling. In the fresh meat department, house-aged NY strip steaks, porterhouse steaks and sirloins are butchered to your specification. Good Polish sauerkraut is made with bacon, apples and onions. Warm German potato salad is well worth a try, as are German ham salad with apples, pickles and capers and hot pastrami sliced thick or thin.
