Safe Routes to School Award Winners

walk to schoolNearly every day at pick-up, I hear parents discuss whether or not they think the streets are safe enough for our children to walk to school. They worry about whether or not there are enough crossing guards; preparing young children for stranger danger; and reckless drivers who are in a rush to get to work.

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a nationwide effort to encourage more and safer walking and bicycling to school. Every year, they put together a study is to understand issues or concerns that folks in the community have about allowing their child to walk or bike to and from school.

Thankfully, Chatham and Madison’s school systems take these concerns very seriously. In fact, several of Chatham’s schools were 2016 winners of the New Jersey Safe Routes to School Recognition Program. They are: Lafayette School, Milton Avenue School and Southern Boulevard School.

Thank you for ensuring that walking and bicycling to school is a priority for our towns!  Keep up the great work and momentum!!
