Front-loading washing machines offer superior cleaning and efficiency, use less water than top-loaders, accommodate larger loads for increased efficiency, achieve better moisture extraction in the spin cycle, which means shorter (and less costly) drying times, and can be stacked with a dryer to save space. Disadvantages are extra bending, no last minute add-ins, special detergents, and long cycles. Here are some of our picks for front loaders:

The Whirlpool Duet Steam (WFW97HEXL) is $1,179 on Amazon. It’s an especially quiet, stackable, and spacious machine with great ratings. It cleans better and uses less detergent, saving nearly 10% in HE detergent costs.

For those tied to the Maytag brand, consider the Maytag Maxima Front Load Steam Washer. comes a premium laundry experience equipped with the PowerWash cycle for the best cleaning in the industry. The 16-hour Fresh Hold option keeps clothes left in the washer fresh. $1331 at Reno’s Appliance.

Consider the popular Bosch WAS24460UC Axxis Series. Good user reviews for washing performance and energy efficiency, Axxis Plus washer designs incorporate a horizontally mounted drum that utilizes high efficiency tumbling action to gently lift and plunge the clothes through the water. They have made this version condensed and stackable. $1326 at Karl’s Appliance.

Kenmore Elite 4154 4.3 cu. ft. Front-Load He Steam Washer  offers a large range of cycles, including a high-heat sanitary option, steam, quiet operation, and a great range of colors. Highly rated by consumer groups and users; $1,367 at Sears.

The LG large capacity washer (model # WM3150HWC) is highly rated, ultra large, and loaded with features. At $1079 (Best Buy), it offers outstanding energy and water efficiency, two optional steam settings, a cycle to moisten clothing to make ironing easier, and another that adds steam for boosting cleaning performance. Finally, it’s stackable.

For the technology-minded, the GE Profile PFWS4605LMG frontload washer determines a load’s weight and dirt-level, then calculates and releases the needed amount of water, detergent, and fabric softener. helps reduce wrinkles, odors and rejuvenates clothes, while Steam Assist feature penetrates fabrics to dissolve soils and help remove tough stains.
