The Wednesday Wars

With a backdrop of the Vietnam war and a protagonist named Holling Hoodhood, Schmidt creates a beautiful and moving coming of age story. 1967 was a tough year for young Holling. It isn’t easy for a 7th grader to learn some pretty grown up lessons. I literally bawled while my 9 year, who had finished the book, looked on and said, “I knew this was going to happen.” Read it even if you don’t have a daughter.
