5 Steps to Keeping the Bugs Off Your Burger

keep bugs off your burgerAfter a sudden thunderstorm, the quickest way to ruin an outdoor gathering is unwanted guests in the form of flying and crawling pests.

Take these 5 simple steps (not including bug spray) to keep the bugs out of your BBQ!

  1. Prep your outside area before the party. Look for old spills, discarded popsicle sticks, other garbage and stagnant water puddles and get rid of them. Best you can, wipe down surfaces with a bleach based cleanser. Provide nothing that attracts bugs.
  2. Spray the surrounding area, especially the grass, with Listerine. I tried it. It works.
  3. Keep the air moving. Dig your old rotating fan out of storage and get it moving. A cool breeze is a great way to ward off flying insects like mosquitoes and flies. What Mother Nature cannot provide can be improvised with an extension cord. If you have only one fan, place it close to the food.
  4. Time dinner carefully. Don’t put out the salads and sides until the food on the grill is ready to go. As soon as everyone has a plate, cover any food you need to leave outside.
  5. Clean up as you go. Make garbage cans with lids accessible so guests can dispose of empty bottles and plates as soon as they are done. Once full and tied tied, keep garbage bags away from the party.

I have mixed feelings about the efficacy of Citronella candles, but I love the look of these from Pier One, on sale for $11.78 — small for $8.98.
