A Run Down On Your Local Farmer’s Market Fruits And Veggies

fruits and veggiesDuring the “Dog Days of Summer” we are often looking for the best ways to beat the heat.   Drinking plenty of water is clearly essential – but in addition to consuming water I was pleased to find out that several of my favorite summer foods are also smart options for keeping us hydrated. These juicy fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamins, electrolytes, and other healthy nutrients.

  1. Cucumbers

96% water and a good source of Vitamin C. I love adding sliced cukes to fresh salads, a veggie platter, or simply munching on them as a snack.

  1. Celery

Also at 96% water and containing minerals and nutrients that aid in hydration.   And that nice crunch makes it very satisfying!

  1. Lettuce

Although the greener varieties provide more nutrients Iceberg Lettuce is almost 95% water. What could be easier than throwing together a colorful summer salad?

  1. Zucchini

95% water content and low in calorie. It provides Vitamins A, C and potassium. One of my summer favorites, there’s so many ways to use zucchini. Love it combined with eggs. Julienne them to replace pasta for a lighter version of your favorite pasta dish. I use it for homemade baked goods as well.

  1. Tomatoes

My personal all time favorite summer produce is made up of 94% water and provides Vitamins A, C, potassium, and antioxidants.   I can think of dozens of ways to eat them, but I think Jersey tomatoes are best eaten by simply slicing and seasoning with coarse salt, freshly ground pepper, and drizzled lightly with good Italian olive oil.

  1. Watermelon

92% water with Vitamins A and C, sodium, calcium and potassium. So delicious and refreshing as a snack or dessert for your family barbecue.

  1. Sweet Bell Peppers

92% water with Vitamins B and C, folic acid, potassium, and betacarotene. Colorful and delicious – I use them in omelets, salads, veggie platters, and grilled kebabs.

  1. Strawberries

92% water and packed with Vitamin C, fiber, potassium, and folic acid. They have enough sweetness to satisfy even my never-ending sweet tooth. I slice them up and add additional berries for a colorful and tasty treat.

  1. Cantaloupe

92% water with nutrients such as Vitamin A and C, and potassium.   Sliced or cut in chunks, cantaloupe is so satisfying and delicious this time of year.

  1. Peaches

88% water and a great souce of Vitamin A and potassium. Jersey peaches are at their peak of deliciousness – juicy and sweet – perfect on a steamy day. Made a homemade peach pie a few weeks ago and YUM!

All of these hydrating foods are plentiful this time of year and available at your favorite local farmers market. I’m going to take advantage of that and keep enjoying these refreshing fruits and veggies while they are still in season!
